  • Mentor and provide support for engagement fellows from newsrooms across California, including LA Times, CalMatters and KCBX.
  • Edit articles, engagement materials and surveys.
  • Brainstorm, develop and execute unique approaches to connecting reporters with community members, including through multi-newsroom collaborations, community events and canvassing.
  • Deliver presentations at conferences, events and workshops to inform and provide examples of engagement journalism.
  • Design graphics, printing material and social media content for fellows.
  • Provide constructive feedback and judge fellowship applications and project pitches.
  • Improve internal workflows to maximize efficiency.

  • Continued to cover housing and homelessness in the Central San Joaquin Valley, writing quick-turn articles, data-driven stories, community driven stories and in-depth investigations, including a deep dive into mobile home park policy in Fresno.
  • Reported on the health impacts of extreme heat and climate change on the unhoused and renter communities with support from the Center for Health Journalism
  • Lead engagement efforts, which involved door-knocking, surveys and forming relationships with other local media and community based organizations.
  • Helped develop Fresnoland’s code of ethics.

  • Covered the health and economic disparities of the COVID-19 pandemic through daily updates, utility guides and enterprise stories.
  • Co-lead an engagement reporting project centered around voters under 40-years-old supported by the Solutions Journalism Network.
  • Covered breaking news, including active shootings, Black Lives Matter protests, wildfires and local elections.
